You. You can do the same hard-nose negotiations they can, and for free. Try the Dave Ramsey sight for suggestions. He’s a christian based financial adviser. Best of luck, we all have things happen in life, deal with them, just as your mom is, and go on : ) I am currently trying to pay off credit cards I ran up, again, and plan to close them all one by one.

You might check out nfcc.org to check out certified credit counseling agencies. Some good ones are GreenPath Debt Solutions (www.greenpath.com) and cccs.org.
Stay away from Debt Settlement Companies! They say that they will reduce your debt for you, but while you’re paying the monthly fee, they don’t do anything until they get the full amount from you to pay off the creditor, even if they negotiate a lower balance. This allows creditors to put you into collections and call and send letters, and maybe even seek legal action. Debt Settlement doesn’t work ideally and you will also have to pay taxes on any "forgiven" debt.
Good luck!

Consumer Credit Counseling is an alternative for consumers experiencing financial difficulties and unable to make their minimum payments. It is better to seek help from any reputed debt relief company. I took help of freedom debt relief ( http://www.freedomdebtrelief.com/ ) to settle my credit card debts. I have joined their debt reduction program one year back and almost debt free now.

The key word here is research. Credit is such a touchy subject, and everyone has a different opinion on what works, what’s a scam, etc. etc.
(There are always "testimonials" for different websites that show up in the answers to these questions)
There are numerous faqs on the differences between debt consolidation, debt settlement, and credit counseling. The answer really depends on the amount due each month, the total amount due, and how much she can really afford to spend. Read, read, read, and find out which would be the best bet for you.
I’ve listed some info in the sources section.
